  Classical Civilization Within this time period, ancient Greece became known to the Minoans and Mycenaeans, then Roman art and design took off, inspired by Greece. While they both led the way for architecture, art, and design, they still held differences and characteristics specific to their region. Greece The Mycenaeans lived on the mainland of Greece and the Minoans were centered on the island of Crete. On Crete, Neolithic communities rose and benefited from the protection that the island gave them from their enemies. The Minoans based their civilization off of the Greek mythology and their historical figures: Minos, Daedalus, Icarus, Theseus, and Ariadne. This concept further emphasizes the fact that within ancient Greece, a lot of what was history and a lot of what was a myth was blurred and intertwined. Ancient Civilization This time period consisted of three civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Nubia. While these places were not very similar, they still exhibit monuments and cultural relics that are inspirational to this day. The one thing they do have in common, however, is the fact that the surrounding rivers are their main resource. Egypt, for example, is known for their monuments. Mesopotamia is best studied for their math, writing, and astrology. Nubia, close to the southern side of the Nile, is the least studied, however, it is an African civilization that influenced Egypt. Mesopotamia Located by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, Mesopotamia had an abundance of villages that were some of the most productive grain regions within the world. Along with Egypt, it was a strong and competitive economic force and was at the forefront of writing, time, math, the sail, urban civilization, and astronomy.   Prehistory Understanding where it all started is critical for learning anything, but especially for interior designers and architects. Historians date it back to the Stone Age, which is better known as the Paleolithic and Neolithic time periods, and into the Bronze Age. These time periods are split up for a multitude of reasons, however, the most obvious being that throughout both Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages, furniture and buildings were predominantly made-up of stone, whereas the Bronze Age introduced bronze as another material to be used. Paleolithic and Neolithic Through the discovering of hand axes and what led early humans to creating such a tool, the purpose of beauty was of heavy discussion amongst historians. This led to the realization that, even today, symmetry aids in the development of beauty. Neolithic people, in particular, responded well to symmetry both within humans and objects.
